What's Coming Up For The Semester

Hey Folks!

This year we are going to be using the SAA Blog to keep you informed about activities and announcements coming up. We only have a limited amount of time to meet for our General Meetings, so check here for extra details and information throughout the year.

Tonight we had our 2nd SAA Board Meeting of the 2014-2015 school year. Here are some things you will need to know from our meeting:

  •  Our first General Meeting is next Tuesday August 12th at 6:30pm in the DCOM building. We will be starting the meeting promptly at 6:30 so please don't be late! Childcare will be provided starting at 6:15pm, so even if you get there a little early you can get your child situated before the meeting. This week we will be doing appetizers and desserts. Feel free to bring your best app/dessert if cooking is your thing, otherwise bring a bag of chips or some cookies! Please don't feel like you need to go out of your way.
  • After orientation there were several concerns about 1. not getting to introduce yourselves to the rest of the spouses 2. wanting job information about the area and 3. not feeling like you had adequate time to ask questions - There will be opportunity for ALL of this at our General Meeting next week, August 12th at 6:30pm :) Please please bring your questions ready to be asked, we will be doing an introduction activity for you all, and a short presentation about job opportunities in the area.
  • If you want to know what events are coming up, check our "Upcoming Events" listed to the right side of the blog. If you want more information about any event, check the "Events" tab at the top, or ask any of the board members.
  • August 19th at 7pm in Harrogate City Park - We are going to have "Ice Cream in the Park". SAA will be providing the ice cream and toppings, so just come ready to eat and mingle so you can get to know other students and spouses a little better.
  • At our General Meeting next week we will be talking about SAA Membership Dues. If you are considering joining the SAA your membership dues for the year are $20 or $60 for all four years. These will be due by September 27th (White Coat).
  • Shelly Wieting and her husband do a Couples Workshop each year to talk about the stresses and amazing things about being a couple and going through medical school together. This is excellent and you won't want to miss it! We're hoping to have it at our September 9th General Meeting, but the alternative option is the following Tuesday September 16th so mark your calendars!
  • We have merchandise to sell!! Adriel will be bringing t-shirts, ornaments, and other LMU-DCOM stuff we have to the General Meeting next week, so if you're interested we would love for you to buy what you'd like to have!
  • At White Coat the SAA will have a table set up where your families can stop by. They can sign up to become SAA members, get their email so they can stay informed about our activities throughout the year, and we're also going to be taking pre-orders Finals Survival Boxes. End of the Semester Finals will be here before you know it, and the SAA will be selling little goody bags for the students that will be delivered the week of finals. This is a great opportunity to support our students' during one of their most stressful times and a great fundraising tool for the SAA. Please send your families to our table so we can help them be advocates for your student as well!
  • We are working on a new Christmas Ornament design for this year and will have it to show you all as soon as it is complete.
  • We will be sending out emails to remind you about our meeting next week and to let you know who else was interested in the activities you were from orientation. If at any time you are wanting to go for a hike, host a game night, etc. please feel free to post on the SAA Facebook Page so others can join you. We are all here for each other so reach out to others if you need something to do.
If you have any other questions/concerns between now and next week please email us at dcomsaa@gmail.com or you can post general questions to the SAA Facebook Page. We are all looking forward to seeing you next week!!
