On Thursday, October 21 the LMU-DCOM SAA will hold it's October General Meeting. All SAA members are invited to attend. We'll begin with a potluck dinner for the whole family. This month's theme is Southern Comfort foods. Dinner begins at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm. We meet in room 105 at LMU-DCOM.

This year the SAA has decided to sponsor Cameron Shawver for the SGA's Mr. DCOM event. This event raises money for the Special Olympics of Tennessee and we are excited to be a part of the fun this year.

July/August Events

We had a whirlwind beginning to the school year. It always seems to go that way! We welcomed the Class of 2014 at orientation July 27.

In August we held a Dessert Night at the Harrogate City Park to welcome the SAA members and the new school year. We had a great turnout with terrific desserts.

Then we had the first Board meeting for the new school year on August 12 followed by the first General Meeting on August 19. We had an appetizer-themed potluck. Then we discussed activities for the coming semester, including Game Night (Sept 17), Fall Festival (Oct 16), and Book Club for October (Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert) as well as fundraising ideas.

Game Night and Tuesday Meeting

Cadever Vigil & Relay for Life

DCOM will be having a Cadaver Vigil to honor the people that gave their life to science tomorrow, Wednesday, August 26 at 5:00. It will be on the northside of DCOM. They will be having a candle light ceremony to celebrate the lives donated to DCOM.

Relay for Life is this Friday, August 28th at Harrogate City Park. Even if you haven't signed up we encourage you to come out and walk a couple laps or just hang out at the DCOM campsite. Our campsite is near the volleyball courts and restrooms. Relay for Life is an all night event that will close at 7:00 am on Saturday. All proceeds made throughout the event will be donated towards cancer research. So many lives have been affected by this awful disease and we're trying to help "Scrub out Cancer". We hope to see you there.

Poker Night

In the spirit of giving the guys something to do in the land of 24/7 studying, we're having a Poker Night this Saturday, August 15. John Velgos is donating the venue; some of you should have met John the afternoon of orientation.

SAA ladies, please pass on the invite to your husbands if they're interested. This'll be the first guys event we've ever had, so we need some turnout. Format - All of this is negotiable depending on what the majority of the group wants to do or can afford, but here's our loose plan: Show up around 6:45 or 7:00, start playing about 7:30 (John Velgos' house, directions below)$20 buy-in, which means everyone starts with $20 and you can't get any more chips Texas Hold'em Payout to top two

If you haven't played much (or any) poker before, don't worry. We're playing the easiest version and it's more of a way to hang out than to play an ultra-serious game of poker, although when it gets down to the last few I'm sure it will get a little more serious. To make sure we've got the right number of tables and space, we need everybody to RSVP by Thursday evening to Rmagann@gmail.com or 405.314.0417.

We hope everyone is settling in with a med school routine. The first week of med school is an overwhelming week full of many emotions. There are a few things happening this week that we wanted to keep everyone updated about.

Tuesday, August 4th- SAA Board Meeting- 7:00 at No Buck's Coffee in Harrogate

SAA members are welcome to attend the Board Meeting. We discuss upcoming events and other topics.

Friday, August 7th

Osteoblast- 4:00- DCOM Parking Lot. Come join in a celebration of surviving the first week of medical school. There will be food and games. Be sure to stop by the Relay for Life booth if you are interested in joining our SAA Relay team.

Movie Night- 7:00- Colleen Fisher's House. Bring your favorite snack and we will be watching a movie. You can bring a movie if you have a favorite, we haven't decided on the movie yet. Here are directions to Colleen's house from DCOM. We hope to see you there!

We are looking forward to a new school year and to meet the incoming medical students, families, and significant others. Orientation will be held at DCOM on July 28th starting at 8:00. To the right is a new link to sign up for Relay for Life. Relay for Life will be held on August 28 at Harrogate City Park. You can sign up at our home page and send out e-mails to family and friends to help donate to our team. Help DCOM support the fight against cancer! We are excited to announce that DCOM-SAA has a link on the AAOA website along with many other DO Advocate Websites that may be helpful. You can check it out by clicking the AAOA picture above (http://www.advocates4dos.org/), click on the side bar under "news", then click "looking for websites" and finally click on the link that says "DO Advocates" and you should see our site!

We had a fun and successful baby shower for two SAA members and their new little ones. We will be celebrating all the hard work our loved ones have put in at a Second Year Send Off BBQ. The BBQ will be hosted at Alarie Ornburn's on Thursday, May 28th at 6:30. Meat will be provided but please bring a side dish to share. Come and celebrate making it through the year!

As May comes to a close we are sad to see some of the second years adventure off to their rotation sites, but we are looking forward to a relaxing summer with our future DOs. We have many things to look forward to and prepare for this summer. DCOM Orientation will be here before you know it and we are excited to meet many new faces although we will miss our second year friends.

Yard Sale and Game Night at No Bucks

Just a reminder, there's a SAA yard sale Saturday, April 4 at No Bucks Coffee in Harrogate. Come by to look or to help. The yard sale begins at 8:00 AM.

There will also be a game night at 7:00 PM at No Bucks following the yard sale. Come with your significant other, husband, fiance, family and bring your favorite game to play. Bring a dessert to share and you can enjoy some delicious coffee. This was a fun night last time! See you there!

“Crown a Student… Grant a Wish!” Sigma Phi Honor Society would like to invite you all to the first ever…. Mr. DCOM Pageant 2009
When: Tuesday, March 24th at 6:00 pm
Where: Auditorium 102
Cost: $3.00 donation; all proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation This is going to be a fun & silly pageant, and I encourage all of you to come to support your classmates! There will be 3-4 faculty judges as well as the best emcee you’ve ever seen, Dr. Teitlebaum!

Gala Reminder Reminder: Spring Gala tickets are on sale at lunch this week!! The week after Spring Break is the LAST week to buy Spring Gala tickets, and MARCH 27th is the LAST day to buy them!!!! Remember- tickets are $35 per person for students and $50 per person for faculty/staff…and it’s going to be a BLAST!! We’re not planning on selling tickets at the door because we need to get food orders, etc. before then…so please make sure you buy your ticket(s) by MARCH 27th!!!
If you’d like to book a room at the Crowne Plaza hotel where the Gala will be held, then please call 865-522-2600 and say you’re with the LMU-DCOM party for the Spring Gala on May 8th. The group discounted rate is $95 for 2 double beds and $105 for a queen/king.

Care Packages- we have 60 addresses so far and we are hoping to get more. Keep reminding all your student’s friends to get those in.

Yard Sale- April 4th in No Bucks Parking Lot. Drop off at Maghin’s house and/or bring to SAA meeting on April 2nd. Please price your own items, all leftover items at the end of the sale will be donated to Goodwill, so if you are wanting any items not sold back, please make arrangements to be there at close to pick them up. Board Meeting Tonight!
Sorry for the late notice, we are trying to get our bearings together after the break! The board will meet tonight at 7:00 p.m. at No Bucks Coffee in Harrogate. You are welcome to join us! Also, I will be arriving at No Bucks at 4:30 p.m. to work on the proposed bylaw changes if anyone wants to join me. Again, I realize that's in 15 minutes :). We're just making last minute plans and wanting to keep you as informed as possible.Hope everyone had a great break!!

End of Semester Breakfasts for OMSI and OMSII

We will be doing two end of the semester breakfasts for our medical students next week! This is service is very much appreciated by the med students and has been a huge success in the past. It is a great way to show our students how great we think they are and congratulate them on a job well done!

The OMSII breakfast will be Monday, December 15 before their last lecture exam. Items can be dropped off on the 2nd floor lounge of DCOM at 7:00 a.m. The OMSI breakfast will be Wednesday, December 17 before their last lecture exam. Items can be dropped off in the 2nd floor lounge of DCOM at 7:00 a.m. as well. If you are able to make something for both breakfasts, that would be wonderful! If you feel that's stretching you a little too thin during this busy time then maybe just try making/providing a dish for your class. If you don't feel you have time to make something, don't feel bad just picking up something at the store. Just grab a bag of donuts from the grocery, doesn't have to be fancy. Lets get to together and send our students out with a bang! Congrats to all of us for putting another semester behind us!

Michael and Shelley Wieting will be hosting the annual SAA Christmas Party this Saturday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will be potluck style. The Wietings will provide the meat and just ask that everyone else bring a side dish or dessert to share. We will also have a Greedy Santa ornament exchange. Participation is optional. If you would like to take part just bring a wrapped Christmas ornament. We had a wonderful time last year, we hope everyone can enjoy us again this year!

ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING AND KNOXVILLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT

December 4, 2008 - Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) invites the community to its annual tree lighting ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, outside the Elizabeth D. Chinnock Chapel. Following the tree lighting, the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra (KSCO) will perform a concert of classical and popular holiday favorites at 7:30 p.m. in the Duke Hall of Citizenship Auditorium. The event is sponsored by LMU, the City of Harrogate and the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce. Admission is free and open to the public.

SAA will provide turkeys, hams, plates, silverware, and drinkware. If you would like to join us, please bring a side dish or dessert. We would also like to ask that you bring a non-perishable item which will be donated to The Manna House in Tazewell, TN. Please take this opportunity to have some fun with friends, as well as assist those in need. Lets kick off the holiday season with an "attitude of gratitude"!

Finally... I've been looking for days and they had not posted movies or show times for Saturday. So, here's the deal; If you want to go see Madagascar 2 then meet at the theatre by 7:00. If you want to you see Role Models meet at 6:30. It seems like meeting right in front of by the stairs would be the most ideal place. We hope to see you there!

This week, we do not have a lot going on, but, what we do have going on will be nice and relaxing.

On Monday afternoon from 11:15-1:45, we will be at school selling t-shirts and other fundraisers. So, if you haven’t seen our blankets, t-shirts, golf towels, or ornaments, please stop by or send your significant other. These items will make great Christmas gift for any of your family members!

**If you have already ordered items from the White Coat, we will also have those orders ready with the exception of ornaments and Polos. Those are currently on Backorder and should be coming in next week.

Election Day is Tuesday – Don’t Forget to Vote!

Saturday night we will be having a Movie Night at Middlesboro Theatre. We will meet at the Theatre about 25 minutes before the movie starts. Check back on Monday to see what movie we will see and the specific time. Even if you are not interested in this particular movie, please come and perhaps some other individuals will share your opinion and you all can go see a different movie together.

Halloween Activities

Hi Guys! We had a great time at the Convention and we gathered a lot of new information and ideas that hopefully we can use with our SAA. I tried to post the information about the children’s party but, we didn’t have access to the internet unless we wanted to spend a good deal of money…it’s Vegas, they want all your money.
So, here are the details. The Family Halloween Gathering will be from 5-9pm at the Town Hall in the Gap. From what I gather, the firemen are going to pass out candy and have some activities that the kids can participate. Also, they have set it up so the kids can go trick-or-treating in the Gap after they are finished at the Fire Station. It sounds like a fun time! Please Join Us if you can.
On the other hand, The Adult party will begin at 9:00 at the UNC in the Gap. In case you could not attend the last meeting or have forgotten, it too is a costume party but only for adults. The UNC was already throwing their big Halloween Bash so we are just joining in. Other people from other places will probably be there, but come join the party for some fun with other SAA’s, students and locals.

Our Yard Sale is on Saturday. Please let me know either through a post or e-mail what time you want to work. It will start at 7am and be held at my house. We will need people to put up signs before hand as well. I know it's early but it's for a good cause....our cause. If you need to drop something off you are more than welcome to do so anytime. You can either put it on my front porch or my back porch if I am not home. E-mail me to get directions.

What's a better way to welcome the fall season than with a chili cook-off, smores, friends, and a camp-fire?

You and your loved ones are invited for ALL the aforementioned. You only need to bring 1. a lawn chair (for each person in your party) 2. What ever you should desire to drink (as drinks will NOT be provided). If you would like to compete your chili in the contest please let me know. Don't forget the Couple's Workshop is this Thursday, September 23. Bring your partner and get an education about what to expect over the next year...or three...or twenty. Hello Everyone and Welcome to our new source of information!!!!

We've been working on a website for quite a while but, since you probably have little to no knowledge about it, you can assume that it has not yet been completed. So, while we are waiting for it to be completed, I figured we could use this blog to keep up with and keep the lines of communication open and running smoothly without filling our inboxes.

As soon as I complete the calendar, I plan on posting it, along with other SAA happenings. Check it whenever you get the opportunity so that you can be "in the know". I hope this helps everyone out.
